Magpies 1 – Dragons 1

Magpies again faced up to a much older Dragons team pushing them hard at the top of the league, their only previous loss being to Magpies. Dragons pressure from the start resulted in a short corner on 10 mins which was well converted to make it 1-0 Dragons. The first half territory was nearly all Dragons with Roger Sweet coaching some great work out of the Magpies defence, with Max and Louis putting in some well timed challenges to keep the skillful attack frustrated.

Magpies did manage to mount a handful of good first half counter attacks, briefly relieving the pressure, but couldn’t get enough support to get clear shooting opportunities against Dragons strong keeper. Dragons took a narrow lead into half time with Magpies still very much in the game.

After a rousing half time team talk by Sweet and Emms, Magpies came out fighting and started to press higher up in the Dragons half. Something seemed to happen to Magpies, and as the 1st team warm up disco fired up on the water based pitch, the Dev team found their groove and also sparked into life. Robertson and Ball were by now all over the pitch, but crucially taking more control in the midfield. Reed was intercepting from the back and creating havoc driving through the centre of the pitch putting balls into the D, but still Magpies couldn’t get the shots in.

Into the final quarter Roger came off, having hardly needed to touch the ball all game, and Magpies then camped themselves around the Dragons D. By this stage the tension was getting too much for the parent supporters club, and into the final minutes of the game a scramble from the right produced a scuffed shot (from somewhere?) which the diving Dragons keeper just kept out. Out of nowhere up popped Jake Caston to calmly push the rebound through a crowded goal line of Dragons defenders – cue mad celebrations! Magpies shut out the last minute and claimed a well deserved draw against a very good older Dragons side.

Men of the Match: Seth and Max, although the whole team really played their best game of the season.

Q) to men’s 1sts – can we borrow the PA system for next home Dev game and can Roger connect his decks?

Mark Emms.
