Magpies thirds maintained their unbeaten run in division 3ne with a 2-0 win over a determined Ipswich team.
Ipswich had most of the first half play but exceptional defending in particular from Deben Nelson and Phil Good kept the score at 0-0 until magpies scored against the run of play. Magpies won a short corner in which Matt Brand displayed his show pony skills with a neat flick.
The second half was a different affair with Magpies controlling and dominating play for long periods. The second goal was scored by the unlikely source of Andy Smith with a truly epic pirouette shot on the edge of the area, which took a wicked deflection to go in the net.
The game was marred in dying few minutes when Craig Whipps was sinned binned for a backhanded lunge tackle in which he failed to get the ball but did get the player.
Magpies 3rds played Bury St Edmunds 2nds hoping to build on the early momentum gained from three straight victories.
Paul Shelley opened the goal scoring after 5 minutes with a salmon like dive from a wonderful Matt Brand pass. Unlike previous games the opposition pushed strongly and finally scored at the end of the first half. Magpies started off slowly in the second half and only began to play well in the finally twenty minutes with quick and fluid passes. A wonderful move and exemplary finish by the leading goal scorer Matt Brand was enough to secure all three points.
Credit must go to the hard working element of the team and in particular James and Robert Goodson who were determined and led by example.
Mens 3rd Team – Match Report – 20th September
Mens 3rds 10 – 0 Norwich City 3rds
Magpies Men’s 3rd Team went into their final pre season friendly on the back of a narrow 4-3 defeat to a strong Magpies 2nd team and a 6-0 win over IES 2nds respectively. Magpies started slower than that of the previous week (where 5 of the 6 goals came before the break) but with quarter of an hour gone they started to find their rhythm. Once again the goals began to flow as Magpies exploited the gaps through the middle of the park and by half-time they found themselves 4-0 up with goals from Matt Brand (3) and Craig Whipps (1).
Magpies went up a few more gears after the break and gave an impressive display of finishing (much improved on the previous week) as they put away chance after chance. Matt Brand and Craig Whipps duplicated their first half tallies to take their totals for the game to 6 and 2 respectively, with Captain Joel Nelson bagging a late brace to take the final score to 10-0.
It has been an excellent pre-season build-up for the 3rds and credit must go to all areas of the field, with the team scoring 19 goals and only conceding 3 against opposition that were either playing their hockey in leagues above them or, as in the case of the last two matches, feature in the same league as the 3rds in the coming season.
