MAY DAY HOCKEY FESTIVAL – HELP NEEDED!

MAGPIES MAY DAY HOCKEY FESTIVAL
Saturday 29 April and Monday 1 May

HELP URGENTLY NEEDED!

This weekend is the club’s May Day Hockey Festival with a mixed tournament on Saturday and club XI day on Monday.  Team entries are coming together but we are very short of helpers to enable the weekend to run smoothly.  The weekend is not only an enjoyable way to bring the season to a close but also a great money earner for the club coffers and therefore please can you all consider again whether you can help with the tasks set out below.

If every club team finds one volunteer from your regular playing squad to give up a couple of hours to help in the kitchen over the weekend we would be fully provided for.  Likewise umpires do not need to be level one qualified so if you are comfortable with umpiring you can volunteer and get some experience in a more light hearted environment.  If you can spare half or a whole day please step forward.

Without the support of the entire club membership this event will struggle to survive.  So your opportunities to volunteer are as follows:

Friday 28th – pitch preparation during the day – marking and goal moving.

Friday 28th – marquee erecting at the club – 6pm till 7pm

Please contact James if you can help with the above – 07800 699074 or ssmith091@btinternet.com

Saturday 29th – umpires required from 10am to 5pm.  Half day or full day positions exist.

Saturday 29th – tournament officials to join James and Kirstin in the nerve centre managing the event over the day.

Saturday 29th – kitchen helpers to assist with the sales of filled rolls, cakes and bacon butties.  Ideally we are looking to have three people in the kitchen at any one time doing two hour slots, i.e.  9 – 11am, 11 – 1pm, 1 – 3pm, 3 – 5pm.

Please contact Kirstin if you can help with the above – 07908 700960 or kirstinjcumming@gmail.com

Monday 1st May…….all the same opportunities exist again for a new willing team of volunteers.

Please have a think and see what time you can donate over this coming weekend to the club to make this year’s event as enjoyable and successful as ever.

Many thanks

James Smith

MAGPIES MAY DAY HOCKEY FESTIVAL

MAGPIES MAY DAY HOCKEY FESTIVAL – your opportunity to Play, Umpire or Volunteer

We hope you have all had an enjoyable Easter Weekend.  Many years ago for those of a certain vintage at the club Easter involved a trip to Colchester to take part in their hockey festival, more often than not played on grass pitches which were generally waterlogged before returning to a steaming clubhouse for a cup of tea or something a little stronger at the end of the day.

This tournament is sadly no more as indeed are so many across East Anglia. However, here at Magpies our May Day Weekend Hockey Festival is going strong and we will be looking to run this again this year with a day of Mixed Hockey on Saturday 29th April and Club Men’s and Ladies’ teams on Monday 1st May.

But this will only be possible with the entire club – players, spectators, umpires and family members – coming together to make the weekend possible by volunteering some of their time.

As always Kirstin and James are looking for help in many ways over the weekend including:

Monday 1st May…….all the same opportunities exist again for a new willing team of volunteers or the same looking for more.

Please can you give the above request due consideration and wherever possible please volunteer.  The more we all lend a hand the easier and more enjoyable this event becomes for the club and indeed our visitors.

Of course there are also playing opportunities – the point of holding the tournament.  The club team event is specifically designed for players from our lower club teams, i.e. Men’s 3rds to 6ths – your regular captain during this season should have already been in touch with you but if not contact them or indeed your club captain via mensclubcaptain@magpies-hockey.co.uk and for Ladies regular players from the 4ths to 7ths again if you have not heard from your captain but want to play contact them or indeed your club captain via ladiesclubcaptain@magpies-hockey.co.uk

As for the mixed event a number of club members have begun organising teams. This event is open to all HMHC players who during this season have regularly played men’s or ladies’ league hockey.  If you have not had a chance to pull together a team of friends or been contacted by a team organiser so far but would like the chance to play in a Magpies team please let your club captains know (as above).  We are desperately seeking some Magpies Ladies at the moment to make up a Magpies team currently being put together.

Both the Saturday and Monday tournaments will involve hockey matches from 10am with the finals being played at 5pm.

Whether you are interested in playing, umpiring or volunteering in some way, shape or form please can you get in touch with James and Kirstin by the end of next weekend (23rd April) to enable the final plans for the weekend to be put together.

Many thanks

James & Kirstin

Magpies May Day Weekend Hockey Festival – Saturday 30 April/Monday 2 May 2016

Dear All

Magpies May Day Weekend Hockey Festival – Saturday 30 April/Monday 2 May 2016

The Festival is under a week away. Pitches are being prepared and running orders and catering finalised. So far 41 teams have entered of which 10 teams are Magpies and a number of others have a Magpie connection or two.

I am sure we will have another great weekend of hockey but more help is required in the form of players, parents or friends of the club. In particular we (James and Kirstin) are looking for the following:

Umpires – More volunteers to umpire would be appreciated for either the mixed competition on Saturday 30 April or the men’s and ladies’ club events on Monday 2 May. Any time you can spare on these days would help and for those not as experienced as some we will ensure you are umpiring with a more experienced umpire. Please contact Kirstin if you can help – kirstinjcumming@gmail.com or give Kirstin a call on 01986 788439.

Marquee assembly – On Friday evening we need to put up a marque for the organisers. This only takes half an hour with 4 people. Can anyone lend a hand between 5pm and 6pm? Please let James know on ssmith091@btinternet.com or call 01379 898767 / 07800 699074.

Pitch preparation – On Friday we need to mark out the two grass pitches, move the goals round and get the bins out. One of James’s favourite jobs. A second or even third pair of hands would be welcome. James will be at the club from 10.00am. Anyone able to spare some time again please let James know on ssmith091@btinternet.com or 01379 898767 / 07800 699074.

Catering – We can raise significant funds for the club by providing food for guest teams. Nothing too fancy, bacon rolls, hot dogs and filled rolls keeps players energy levels up – as well as mugs of tea, coffee and hot chocolate. However to do this we need a team of kitchen volunteers to prepare and serve. If you can spare 2 hours on either Saturday 30th April or Monday 2nd May please let Kirstin or James know. The slots we are looking to fill on each day are 10am to 12 noon, 12 noon to 2pm, 2pm till 4pm and 4pm till 6pm.

General Tournament Duties

If you would like to help at the event but think your skills are not suited to any of the above please let James know…..a pair of willing hands on the day to keep the organisers sane is always welcome.

This is a challenging and tiring event to put together but over the last 20 years of my involvement with the help of the wider club we have always pulled it off and have made a success of the day. The only such tournament left in the East of England. If you can help in anyway next weekend please do step forward and get in touch with Kirstin or James.

Many thanks.

James & Kirstin

7-a-side Comic Relief tournament – UEA – Sunday 20 March 2016

magpies-mixed-winners

A hastily assembled mixed team arrived at UEA sporting hangovers and sunglasses to represent Magpies at the 7-a-side Comic Relief tournament.

The round-robin event consisted of seven games per team and Magpies won all their seven. They thought it was then over but UEA decided they needed a semi and a final which after energy tablets the team mustered the strength to play!

After more than 2.5 hours pitch time the team somehow found the legs (and heads) to play two more games which they also won to be crowned Champions!

The team consisted of Lucy, Lewis, Lauren, Andrew, Rhea, Adam, Sam and Holly.

MAY DAY WEEKEND HOCKEY FESTIVAL 2015 – HELP!

MAY DAY WEEKEND HOCKEY FESTIVAL 2015

This event sees Magpies entertain 40 hockey teams over Saturday (2 May) and Monday (4 May) in our annual mixed ladies’ and men’s tournaments.

Not only is this a really enjoyable way to catch up with old friends from across East Anglia and to bring the season to a close but for some it will be their first opportunity to experience the game in its original form with the club’s grass pitches in use.

However to achieve a successful weekend Kirstin and I need the support of the club in the form of volunteers. In particular we need help to run the kitchen and keep those playing and officiating fed and watered. 2 hour slots are available from 10am until 6pm on both Saturday and Monday.

If you are able to help we would be delighted to hear from you.  Please contact Kirstin by email kirstinjcumming@tiscali.co.uk who will be pleased to allocate you a slot.

Many thanks

MAGPIES MAY DAY WEEKEND HOCKEY FESTIVAL 2014

Dear All

The Magpies May Day Weekend Hockey Festival is proving very popular once again and we have 19 Mixed teams entered for Saturday 3 May, with just one more team to find, a full house of Ladies’ Club teams and a growing list of Men’s teams for the Club Day on Monday 5 May.

However, to organise and run this event Kirstin Cumming and James Smith need your help.

Many of you have already offered your services as umpires, officials and as part of the catering team. Thank you.

But we could still do with some more volunteers.

1. Anyone with a whistle and a free morning, afternoon or day would be welcomed. Please contact Kirstin on kirstinjcumming@tiscali.co.uk or 01986 788439.

2. Any player, parent or friend of the club who could offer two hours of their time to assist with serving food from the kitchen on either day would, again, be really appreciated. Please contact Kirstin on kirstinjcumming@tiscali.co.uk (01986 788439) or James on ssmith091@btinternet.com (01379 898767)

3. Anyone who has spare time on the evening of Wednesday 30 April, Thursday 1 May or all day on Friday 2 May and would be happy to assist with marking the pitches, moving goals and putting up the marquee would be welcomed. Please contact James on ssmith091@btinternet.com (01379 898767).

Finally, I hope, of course, that as many of you as possible have found playing opportunities. I am aware that Tim Allen has organised a Mixed team and is looking for a few more players. If you are interested in a game on Saturday 3 May please feel free to contact Tim direct on tim.allen@myrtle-net.com. If we are overwhelmed with demand it may be possible to enter another Magpies Mixed team. For the avoidance of doubt you must be a regular adult hockey team to play in this tournament.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you.

James Smith and Kirstin Cumming

Harleston Magpies May Day Hockey Festival 2013 – Review

Harleston Magpies May Day Hockey Festival 2013 – Review

Apart from a sharp shower on Saturday the weekend was perfect for the final significant hockey fixture at Harleston Magpies this season, the May Day Hockey Festival. For over 25 years Magpies have hosted a weekend of tournament hockey over the May Bank Weekend and this year the event attracted 40 teams from across East Anglia.

On Saturday 4th May it was the Mixed event, 20 teams gathered with players from Spalding, Bishop Stortford and Aberdeen forming teams to compete for the title of best East Anglian Mixed Hockey team, out of those who entered. Following a series of round robin matches on both astro turf and grass pitches Marvel Loss (a team consisting of players mainly from Lincolnshire clubs) met Hula Girls (a Harleston Magpies social team) in the Cup Final. At the end of full time penalty flicks were needed to separate the teams with Marvel Loss taking the title just before sudden death penalties loomed. Alex Slater of Hula Girls was named player of the final and the team best dressed!

In the Mixed plate competition Norwich Dragons, a last minute additional to the days line up over came a spirited Norwich City team to take the trophy. Hannah Jarvis being named player of the match.

On Monday 6th May the men’s and ladies club XI’s took centre stage. 10 men’s teams and 10 ladies teams competed in both Cup and Plate competitions with surprising enthusiasm and fitness on what turn out to be a very hot day.

In the Ladies Section it was good to see two local sides coming to the fore. Harleston Magpies Ladies reached the Cup Final and Diss Ladies the Plate Final. Diss sadly fell just a goal short of winning the plate competition with Newmarket pipping them to the post, April Atkinson of Newmarket was named player of the final. However Magpies were able to go one better and won the Cup beating Grasshoppers 1-0 in final. The Grasshoppers skipper, and former Magpie, Micayla Tootill was named player of the final.

In the men’s event defending champions, Newmarket rose to the occasion and beat a tiring Norfolk Pies in the final 2 – 0 to retain the title. Will they make it three in a row next year? Stuart Wardle of Norfolk Pies was named player of the final. In the Plate Norwich Dragons won their second title of the weekend. Despite a steady start with only one victory during their round robin matches they fought hard in the knockout stages progressing to the final were they overcame IES 1 – 0. Goal scorer and team captain Simon Nesbet also received player of the final.

MAGPIES MAY DAY WEEKEND HOCKEY FESTIVAL 2013

MAGPIES MAY DAY WEEKEND HOCKEY FESTIVAL 2013

If you regularly visit the Magpies’ website you will have noticed the posting of this year’s entry form for the above to be played on Saturday 4 and Monday 6 May.

Over the next few weeks Kirstin Cumming and I will be looking for volunteers to help with running the event – i.e. for umpires, groundsmen, caterers, bar staff and first aiders – but at this time we want you to start thinking about entering a team. Last year we had a full house so please do not delay and if you are interested in entering a team please download an entry form and return it to me at ssmith091@btinternet.com or hand it to Kirstin or me when you next see us at the club.

The event is a good opportunity for club teams to mix up and enjoy some light-hearted hockey at the end of a long season.

This year’s format will consist of:

Saturday 4 May – Mixed Hockey Tournament (maximum of 20 teams). All regular league hockey players are invited to take part, just form a team with a group of friends, decide on a name and get in touch. Fancy dress is proving popular with some teams but is not essential – just the desire to play hockey and have some fun. Please also feel free to promote the event or challenge hockey players at other clubs or schools to enter teams and take part; the more the merrier.

Monday 6 May – Club XI Hockey Tournament for men’s and ladies’ teams. We are able to accommodate 10 ladies’ teams and 10 men’s teams and to ensure a fair competition for all this event is restricted to ladies who play in the Norfolk or Suffolk leagues and men from Division 3 downwards. Unfortunately in this event we do have to limit the number of Magpies’ club teams that enter. Therefore we can only accommodate two Magpies’ teams per section so if you want to enter a team please discuss with your captain and get in touch with me as soon as possible at ssmith091@btinternet.com or 07800 699074.

I hope we will have another wonderful turn out of club teams and officials to make this year’s event another success.

NB. Entries are taken on a first come, first served basis so don’t leave it too late and run the risk of disappointment. Please get in touch with me as soon as possible.

Magpies’ Tournament

Hello there,

I was just reading through the report on the Magpies’ Tournament that took place over the May Bank Holiday weekend. As part of the UEA team that managed to get through to the Plate final I would like to extend my thanks for a wonderful day – once again we all had a great time, though bitterly disapointed to have missed out on silverware for the 2nd year in a row despite making the final.

I have a small point – I was awarded the POTF award for which I am very thankful for after not having the greatest season with UEA’s 2nd team (we got relegated!). However as has been pointed out by many of my colleagues you took down my name as Tim Parker, whereas it is actually Tim Barker.

Obviously this is simply a matter of pride on my part, and seems petty even now but if you could possibly amend your records I would be extremely grateful.

Many thanks again for a brilliant day – we shall no doubt be back again next year!
Kind regards,

Tim ‘The Parker’ Barker

Thanks Tim, we have just updated copy to Tim Barker!
