HARLESTON MAGPIES LADIES 1ST TEAM AGAINST CAMBRIDGE CITY HC
Harleston Magpies Ladies sponsored by Musker McIntyre Estate Agents played away this Saturday against Cambridge City HC. The two teams drew last time they met and with Cambridge winning against league leaders Wimbledon last weekend, Magpies knew it was going to be a tough game. Following a high energy warm up Magpies felt ready to take on the test of Cambridge.
Magpies start to the game couldn’t have been better, passing the ball quickly and leading well, creating problems for the Cambridge defence and winning a short corner in the first minute. Magpies forward Maria Andrews stepped up to calmly hit the ball in to the bottom right hand corner, putting the team one nil ahead. Magpies were pushing hard and trying to put themselves another goal ahead, with chances just missing the goal and some great defending by Cambridge preventing this. However, quick counter attacks from Cambridge were a danger and one such attack ended in a goal for Cambridge, putting the score level. Both teams carried on fighting and each team had chances both in open play and from penalty corners to put them in the lead but neither team were able to capitalise on them, leaving the score 1-1 going in to half time.
The second half started, both teams wanting to win and Magpies pushing forward making some good leads up the pitch with the midfield working hard to link play and causing a few problems for the home sides defence, but none were successful in putting Magpies ahead. At the other end Cambridge had won a short corner and with a routine that took Magpies by surprise the ball rolled over the line taking Cambridge ahead. However, Magpies, never a team to give up, put everything they had into the game, pushing Cambridge back into their half, moving the ball around the pitch and winning short corners but unfortunately no success came from these. Chances on the posts were just missed or deflected wide in open play but still Magpies did not give up. You couldn’t fault the players for their effort but it was not to be and however much Magpies pushed forward or had shots the ball would not go in, leaving the score line 2-1. Next week Magpies will be playing league leaders Wimbledon at home at 14:00 and will be ready to defend their undefeated run at home.
