Harleston Magpies Ladies 1st Team against West Herts
Harleston Magpies ladies, sponsored by Musker McIntyre Estate Agents, played newcomers to the league West Herts and showed them the high standard needed to be in this league with a convincing win of 5-2.
With a good mindset, warm up and some excellent support from the injured Kath Johnson on the side line Magpies felt on their way to beginning their season well. The start of the game saw Magpies go 1 nil up after 2 minutes with Lucy Whiting scoring in open play. The women felt confident, although they did not have control of the ball all of the time with the defenders and midfield players battling hard to keep the ball out of the circle. However, this pressure on Magpies allowed for great opportunities to use the practiced counter attacking play. The forwards did not miss these opportunities and Magpies saw another goal from Victoria Findlay after 24 minutes with Kara Kilbourn following with another shortly after. This left Magpies on a high going in to the second half 3-0 up.
The second half saw Magpies pushed into their own half again finding it difficult to create opportunities to get the ball up the pitch with West Herts putting on a high press. However, the chances Magpies did get, they took, with a short corner being converted by Louisa Greenacre from the top of the circle and deflected in to the top of the goal. This was not the end of the goals in this game with West Herts fighting back and scoring two goals in quick succession whilst Magpies were on the back foot. Magpies women regrouped changed the formation and held strong to change the momentum and put Magpies back on top finishing with a goal from Elizabeth Clymer to finalise the score and the game at 5-2.
Magpies look to continue with this momentum in to next Saturdays game at home at 14:00 against Northampton Saints.
