Wimbledon 1 Harleston Magpies 0
Harleston Magpies sponsored by Musker McIntyre Estate Agents this week travelled to in-form Wimbledon, who before the game were sitting third in the table three points ahead of Magpies.
Magpies started the game brightly, forcing Wimbledon back with a well-worked press. Emma Lee-Smith who was welcomed back into the squad this week, was a constant threat with a number of driving runs towards goal.
Mid-way through the half it looked like Magpies had found the breakthrough, when Emma’s shot deceived everyone and hit the post Lucy Whiting was well placed to tap home, only for the umpire to adjudge there to have been an infringement. Magpies did not allow their heads to drop and remained in control of the game, despite not finding that all important goal.
After the half-time break, Wimbledon came out strongly and put the Magpies’ defence under a lot of pressure. Possession was more evenly matched, but it was Wimbledon that took the lead 15 minutes into the half after a quick break-away and an excellent strike into the side netting.
Despite Magpies having their own chances to level the scores, Wimbledon’s quick forwards were a constant treat and Magpies had to defend a number of short corners to keep the score at 1-0.
Despite the result being a huge disappointment, the management was pleased with a good team performance against a strong Wimbledon team. Next week Magpies welcome second placed Cambridge City to Weybread in their final game of the season.
