Harleston Magpies U14 Girls 5th in National Finals

HARLESTON MAGPIES U14 GIRLS FINISHED  5TH  IN THE NATIONAL FINALS AT WAKEFIELD HOCKEY CLUB

Harleston Magpies U14 Girls finished 5th in the National Finals at Wakefield Hockey Club.

Magpies had a very tough baptism to the National Finals when they played Surbiton in their opening  match. Clearly Surbiton are a top side but Magpies did not have a chance to settle before Surbiton took a 2-0 lead in the opening eight minutes. From then on it was a battle to contain Surbiton, but Magpies settled down in the second half as they regained some composure and in a few attacks showed glimpses of what they are capable of, but over all Surbiton had too much quality and ran out 3-0 winners.

In Magpies second match they met Kirkby Lonsdale who had already beaten Worcester 4-0 in their opening match. In the first half Magpies were the better team and probably deserved to be in the lead at half time, but just before the interval  Kirkby Lonsdale took the lead against the run of play. From then on the opposition grew in confidence and punished Magpies in the second half with a second goal that killed the game.
In the final match in the section Magpies beat Worcester 3-2 with goals from Georgina Warren, Abby Gooderham and Tor Findlay. Magpies should have won more comfortably as they were the better side, but defensive frailties kept allowing Worcester back into the game.

So Magpies finished third in their section and in the final match they played City of York in the 5th/6th playoff match. Magpies completely dominated the match and took the lead through Tor Findlay and then continued to squander chances to keep City of York in the match. In the final minute Magpies had to defend a penalty corner to secure 5th place.

This was a great experience for these young Magpies to compete against the best teams in the country and on another day they could realistically have been involved in the 3rd /4th playoff match.
Hopefully the experience will motivate them to want to continue to improve and to have the opportunity to play in more occasions like this in the future.
