Harleston Magpies Hockey Club are celebrating a bumper weekend of youth action after both the girls and boys under 18 squads progressed to the quarter finals of the England Hockey National U18 cup competition on 11 March. Both teams did very well, with the girls qualifying by beating Chelmsford 5 – 3 and the boys beating Saffron Walden 4 – 1. There are no other East Region teams left in the competitions.
Against Chelmsford, Magpies U18 girls had the better of the early play, playing attacking hockey throughout. 20 minutes into the first half, the score was level at one all, making Magpies rally together and after 25 minutes some excellent passing resulted in a great goal to restore the lead. A third goal after 29 mins put Magpies 3-1 ahead at half time. In the first minute of the second half, Chelmsford caught out Magpies and scored to make the score 2-3 and put Chelmsford back into the game. Robust defending by the Magpies girls helped Magpies go 3-4 ahead at 56 mins. Magpies pushed forward looking for another goal and on 62 minutes a fifth was added from just inside the D with a powerfully struck shot, making the final score 3-5 to Magpies.
Magpies U18 boys (pictured) won a tough encounter against Saffron Walden. Starting brightly, Magpies scored within two minutes when a great break then doubled their lead from a short corner after the initial shot was saved but Magpies picked up the rebound and calmly slotted home. The boys made it 3-0 with a strong run and reverse stick strike. The second half was a more even affair with both sides creating chances and neither side really taking control of the game. Saffron Walden scored to reduce the arrears but the goal spurred Magpies on and it was no surprise when Magpies scored again, and controlled the final minutes of the game to run out 4-1 winners.
David Johnson, Chair of the Youth Committee at Magpies said: ‘It’s a huge thank you from me to all the managers, coaches and other helpers who support Magpies youth section. The hard work put in by the young people and everybody who supports them is producing an enjoyable hockey experience as well as tremendous success on the pitch. The results last weekend in the national competitions are testament to this, and we have high hopes for 11 March!’
