Ladies 1st v Bedford 1 (Away (L) D 1-1)
On a chilly but sunny afternoon, Harleston Magpies sponsored by Musker McIntyre Estate Agents travelled to Bedford in good spirits determined to get some more points on the board.
Magpies began brightly exerting pressure on the opposition in the first few minutes of the match pinning Bedford in their own half. The team looked sharp and alert as they took the game to Bedford.
Bedford’s first foray into the Magpies’ half was kept at bay with some good defensive tackling that kept them away from the D. However, from their first visit to the D Bedford scored after 8 minutes completely against the run off play.
Magpies resounded immediately by hitting a dangerous ball into the D but without finding a player. In the 12th minute Abby Gooderham intercepted a Bedford pass and managed to get a shot in but only to see it go off-target.
Good work by Emma Lee-Smith exerted more pressure on Bedford but they stood firm. Bedford earned a short corner after a controversial umpiring decision against Lottie Summers but Magpies defended it well.
At the other end there was a scramble in the hosts’ D but no shot on goal resulted.
After a Bedford short corner that was well saved by keeper Charlotte Peet, Magpies broke down the right with Aoife Lowe-Davies making a great run and delivering a cross into the D that was cut out by the Bedford defence. Despite sustained attacking play it remained 1-0 to Bedford at half time.
Magpies started the 2nd half how they finished the 1st and continued to press Bedford back into their own half. Abby Gooderham saw a shot well saved and Emma Lee-Smith made a great run towards the D.
After further attacking forays led by Annie Nunn and Lucy Whiting, Magpies were awarded their first short corner of the game which was converted by Emma Lee-Smith with a ferocious shot that nearly broke the back board, to bring the sides level.
Bedford raised their game and had their turn at piling on the pressure but Magpies’ defence stood firm thanks to great work from Louisa Greenacre clearing off the line and Charlotte Peet in goal.
In pursuit of a late winner Emma Lee-Smith’s determined run ended with a spectacular collision with the Bedford keeper which thankfully ended without injury. With three minutes to go Annie Nunn earned Magpies another short corner and only another great save by the Bedford keeper denied Emma Lee-Smith the winner. It ended 1-1, a good result but a performance that really deserved to take all three points.
