Ladies 1st v Wimbledon (Home (L) L 0-4)
Harleston Magpies sponsored by Musker McIntyre Estate Agents this week headed into a tough game against Wimbledon who are a strong and skilful team. After Wimbledon scored to make it 0-1 in the first 15 minutes from a counter attack, Magpies stepped up the pressure. Forwards worked well to put pressure on the transfer, being patient and making a few interceptions, breaking down the sustained Wimbledon possession. Lauren Barber made some key tackles to ensure Magpies did not suffer from play down the middle. Retained possession and patience lead to another goal from Wimbledon to make it 0-2. Magpies threatened the Wimbledon side from good link up play down the right from Rose Winter and Charlie Harrison, with a good ball into the D where Magpies narrowly missed out on a goal. An attempt to tackle GB Olympic Gold Medalist Crista Cullen from Tor Findlay, resulted in a green card for Magpies who were then down to 10 players. At the end of the first half another two players received green cards and Magpies were therefore starting the second half with 9 players.
Having few scoring opportunities in the first half, Magpies were prepared to battle hard and try and create more attacking opportunities. An early second half goal from Wimbledon made the score 0-3 but Magpies did not give up. Magpies tactically changed their press to half court to make it more difficult for Wimbledon to use aerials successfully. With some promising attacks, Magpies tried to gain a goal but were closed down quickly and put under pressure. Some great saves from Charlotte Peet who was continuously under pressure kept Magpies from conceding any more field goals. Knowing Wimbledon’s short corners were a big threat, Magpies fought hard in the circle to deal with this but Wimbledon were clinical and scored another goal, leaving the score 0-4 at full time. Magpies put in all their efforts and gave the Wimbledon side a competitive match.
Next week, Magpies travel to high-flying Hampstead and Westminster who are currently unbeaten and sit top of the league.Squad: Charlotte Peet (GK), Lucy Belsey (Capt.), Lauren Barber, Jess Howland, Katherine Ridley, Louisa Greenacre, Lottie Summers, Lauren Mickleburgh, Charlie Harrison, Rose Winter, Martha Lawrence, Lucy Whiting, Tor Findlay, Lizzie Clymer, Aoife Lowe-Davies.
