LADIES 1 V BEDFORD W 3-0
Harleston Magpies sponsored by Musker McIntyre Estate Agents travelled to Bedford hoping to start their season with a win.
The game begun at a frantic pace but with neither team able to retain possession or find a break-through in the final quarter. Magpies best chance in the early play was created when Lauren Rowe’s short corner drag was saved spectacularly by the Bedford goalkeeper sending the ball high into the air. As the ball fell and Rose Winter was about the pull the trigger the umpire awarded Magpies another corner due to the perceived dangerous play.
As the half an hour mark approached without a breakthrough Magpies were getting anxious that they needed to make their early possession count. They did just that after a quick passing move down the right found Emma Lee-Smith who burst into the circle and slipped the ball square to Tor Findlay who calmly slotted home under pressure from the Bedford goalkeeper.
Two minutes later another excellent move down the right found Rose Winter, after an excellent driving run to the top of the circle she doubled Magpies lead with a classy strike into the corner of the goal which left the Bedford goalkeeper with no chance.
At half-time with a 2-0 lead Magpies knew that they needed to continue to play fluid passing hockey in order to push on and extend their lead further. Bedford came out strong in the second half attacking with more vigor and purpose. The Magpies defence however held strong and cleared up any Bedford attacks, not conceding one short corner all game.
As the hour mark approached Magpies were able to extend their lead further after Emma Lee-Smith found Lauren Rowe in space in the circle. Under pressure from the Bedford goalkeeper Lauren managed to get a reverse stick shot away beating the goalkeeper at the near post.
A drilled Magpies performance with great flair in attack allowed Magpies to see out the game and take all three points from their opening encounter.
Next week, Magpies welcome Wimbledon to the nest, anticipating very strong opposition from the side that finished second in the league last season.
