ladies 1st Team v Hampstead & Westminster
(Away (L) L 0-6)
After facing high-flying Wimbledon last week, Harleston Magpies sponsored by Musker McIntyre Agents travelled to central London to face table-topping Hampstead & Westminster (H&W), in front of a good number of vocal Magpies’ supporters.
The game began with H&W applying some early pressure which resulted in a 4th minute short corner. A direct shot from the corner hit the back board to make it 1-0.
Despite being pushed back by some slick opposition play, Magpies defended resolutely and after 8 minutes following good work by Lizzie Clymer they earned a short corner themselves. Lauren Barber’s resulting shot was cleared off the goal line by the H&W defence.
There was controversy in the 12th minute when the umpire initially ruled a penalty flick in favour of H&W, that was subsequently overturned for a short corner instead. From the set play Magpies’ keeper Charlotte Peet made a magnificent save with her outstretched left foot, one of many fine saves she would make in the match.
H&W continued to pile on the pressure racking up a number of short corners that the Magpies’ defence did well to keep out. Attacking moments were few and far between for Magpies but when they did break they looked dangerous. In the 26th minute they earned their second short corner of the match forcing the H&W keeper to make a great save from Abby Gooderham’s drag flick. Minutes later another Magpies’ attack saw the ball flash across the D but there was no one on hand to tuck it away.
On the stroke of half-time Magpies conceded their 6th short corner and from it H&W scored their second to make it 2-0 at half time.
The second half continued where the first half finished with relentless H&W possession and from their 10th short corner of the match made it 3-0. Then two good goals from fast attacking breaks took H&W into a 5-0 lead.
Magpies continued to work hard despite the margin in the scoreline, that earned them a couple of short corners which saw good defending keep out shots from Abby Gooderham and Lauren Barber.
H&W made it 6-0 with three minutes to go but Magpies finished the game with a good spell that saw Annie Nunn‘s reverse stick shot well saved by the H&W keeper.
This was always going to be a tough game against a well-drilled team with a 100% record but Magpies proved their resilience by battling on. This experience should help them with the rest of the season and they move on to the next match away against Bedford.
