Ladies 1st v Cambridge City (Home (L) L 1-2)
Harleston Magpies sponsored by Musker McIntyre Estate Agents this week welcomed Cambridge City to The Nest, anticipating a tough match against a strong side sitting just above them in the table.
Cambridge started off the dominant team, putting Magpies under a lot of pressure. Despite some good defending by the back line and saves by Charlotte Peet in goal it was Cambridge who were first to score. A well executed penalty corner by Cambridge put them 1-0 up. Magpies at times had some good chances going forward but it was Cambridge who were continuing to attack and after a number of corners they won a penalty stroke. Up stepped Olympic Gold Medalist Helen Richardson-Walsh to take the stroke. A superb stick save by Charlotte Peet denied Richardson-Walsh and buoyed Magpies to attack with more confidence. Lizzie Clymer and Rose Winter playing some excellent balls through to the forward line to create chances for Magpies to score.
With Magpies now having the momentum, Debbie Francis won the ball from Richardson-Walsh in midfield and passed to Rose Winter. Rose turned on the burners, accelerating down the right and finding Abby Gooderham on the baseline. Abby kept strong and composed as she carried the ball into the D and squared to Lizzie Clymer who comfortably slotted the ball home to bring the scores even at half time.
The second half brought fast attacking play by both sides. Unfortunately Magpies struggled to convert their chances whilst Cambridge were clinical and won another penalty corner which they converted, giving them the 2-1 lead.
With not long to go and nothing to lose, Magpies continued to press hard. Rose Winter began to control the midfield and linked up well with the forward line. In the last few minutes a change of tactic sent Lauren Rowe to defence to switch the game up using her fantastic aerial to get the ball quickly to the forwards. Despite Magpies’ best efforts no further chances could be converted and the final score was 2-1 to Cambridge.
Next week Magpies travel away to Southgate. A game which Magpies will be determined to take 3 points from.
