Ladies 2nd Team v Broxbourne 1 L 1-3
The youthful 2nds made the long trip to newly promoted Broxbourne, looking to build on a couple of good team performances.
We were greeted with a wet windy afternoon but welcomed re-inforcements from the 3rds with Harness,Collison and Wells making their 2nd team debuts.
After a short warm up, the game started with Magpies trying to draw the sting but it was the home side who started quickly and were soon to take the lead after a well rehearsed PC found the net.
The game was quite open and Magpies were looking a threat on the break but likewise the committed home side were looking a serious threat in our defensive D.
The home side doubled their lead after a PC was cleared off the line but straight to a home forward who fired home.
Magpies then had periods of good play down the flanks which had the home side on the back foot and a number of driven crosses fizzed across the home goal without us getting the decisive final touch. Likewise at the other end Wells made some fine saves to keep us in the game
Although 2 nill down at half time, the Pies had grown into the game but knew the home side were a well organised outfit so we would need to start the 2nd half well.
A blow for Magpies came when Broxbourne netted a 3rd PC, early in the second half and and for a while it looked like the home side may run away with it.
To the team’s great credit, we had our best spell of the match with great work down the flanks again producing dangerous moments in the home defence and from one such break down the left by Harness, the ball was squared across to Legg to tap into the unguarded net with around 15 mins to go. Magpies then pushed hard for a further way back into the game and towards the end carved out a flurry of Penalty Corners but the home side kept us out to run out 3.1 winners.
In truth the strong committed skilfull home side deserved their win but the Pies never gave up with the young side battling to the end,
Next week, a home game versus COP where we welcome back a couple of on loan Magpies to the Nest.
