Pelicans III 0 – 1 Magpies Ladies IV
After their brilliant start to the league campaign last week, Magpies travelled to Kings Lynn for an early push back against fellow-promoted Pelicans, the team that pipped Magpies to the league title last season.
Magpies were certainly up for this game, and they seemed the stronger side in the opening exchanges, enjoying more of the possession and getting the ball into the home side’s defending third. However, Pelicans looked dangerous on the break, and Magpies needed to stay solid and composed at the back to contain the home side’s threat. Magpies won a couple of short corners, and certainly had more shots on goal than Pelicans but could not convert any of their chances and the first half ended goalless.
Pelicans came out hard in the second half, and the match seemed to be swaying into their favour, until Magpies had a good move on the right hand side, with Rachel Peters crossing the ball into the ‘D’, which ended in a Kay Dennis goal, the ball slotted in past the keeper from close range. Magpies were determined to keep their lead, and defended brilliantly against Pelicans’ short corner routines; Liz Cole, Sarah Legg, Claire Snelling and Becky Ford at the back for Magpies were not going to be beaten. Similarly, Kristina Erith in the Magpies’ goal pulled off some brilliant saves to keep the score at one nil.
A brilliant display from Magpies, perhaps not their best hockey, but they fought hard for the victory and it was certainly well deserved. Bring on next week!
