Magpies Ladies IV 3 – 6 Norwich Dragons III
In conditions too hot for a game of hockey, Magpies hosted Norwich Dragons in their final friendly match before league games commence next week.
Magpies started quickly, going a goal up in the early moments; a good cross in from Kay Dennis on the right wing found Laura Schultheiss in front of the ‘keeper, and with a first time strike connected sweetly with the ball to fire Magpies into the lead. This was shortlived however, as Norwich showed their strength and resilience and got two goals in quick succession to take the advantage. The heat certainly affected Magpies, whereas Norwich, clearly the stronger team, pressed forward and soon added two more goals to their tally. Magpies’ heads didn’t go down though, and a short corner routine ended with Schultheiss well-positioned on the penalty spot to crack in her second goal, keeping Magpies in the match.
The second half saw two more goals for the away side before Beth Alexander popped up at the far post to get one back for Magpies. Both teams struggled in the final minutes as the heat was draining energies all over the pitch, and the final score was 6-3 to Norwich.
Credit must be given to Kristina Erith in the Magpies’ goal for her numerous saves and goal-line clearances, and also to the defence and midfield for their continued effort and commitment in difficult circumstances. Bring on the first league match next week!
