Having missed last week’s match and training this week due to frozen pitches, the Ladies 6s were keen to get back on pitch. UEA started the game at a much faster pace than the 6s have encountered this season, however the 6s showed they were able to match this. Georgia and Holly worked tirelessly in the midfield to brake down several UEA attacks. Being called into action regularly, Liv, Marie, Mary and Jane supported each other well as a defensive unit to mark their speedy opposition. Despite this UEA managed to pile on the pressure and force in the first goal of the game. Magpies 6s dug deep, co-ordinating well to re-find the passing rhythm that has stood them in good stead all season. Forwards Laura and Georgie made UEA work really hard, all making good leads to create useful space. A few short corners were won this half that UEA shut down well. Thankfully Rach found space to score a great goal and level the to 1:1 at half time. Second half UEA again came charging out of the starting blocks, catching the 6s off-guard with a well taken goal. This helped the 6s realise that they needed to up the tempo. Superb teamwork and passing play from the whole team lead to sustained attacks in the opposition’s half of the pitch. Judith intercepted play well to keep possession and fire the ball forwards to find Janna who forced the keeper to make some good saves. Again the team pressured enough to win not just short corners but two penalty strokes; Rach showed her class by coolly scoring the second of these to take the score to 2:2. UEA did not let this deter them though; Imogen being called into play to pull off a string of good saves. A final push and yet another short short corner was won. This time the 6s managed to convert through Mary. A great contest, the 6s played doggedly right up to final whistle to seal the win, proving why they deserve their top of the table position. Player of the match: Mary Nelson.
