Harleston Magpies Ladies Indoor team sponsored by Durrants Estate Agents began this season’s indoor league campaign with a long trip to Bristol. The Magpies team included a mixture of youth and experience, with Alice Woollatt and Charlotte Seaman making their Indoor National League debuts and Sarah Brook and Lizzie Jones returning to play in Magpies colours.
The first match was a tough test against Premier Division Birmingham University and with only 4 mins left to play the score remained 2-1 to the students, but some clinical finishing in the final minutes of the match saw them run out 5 – 1 (Lauren Rowe) winners.
Magpies stepped up their performance in the second game of the day against Brooklands Poynton and went into half time with a 2-1 lead after goals from Lauren Rowe and Lauren Barber. With Magpies unable to extend their lead Poynton where fortunate to find themselves back on level terms and before Magpies could reply Poynton took the lead and all three points.
An experienced Sevenoaks team were Magpies next opponents. The organisation and work rate of the Magpies defensive unit of Lizzie Jones, Lauren Barber, Debbie Francis and Megan Brown was exceptional throughout the game frustrating the skilful Sevenoaks attack on numerous occasions. The deadlock was finally broken late in the second half and as Magpies pressed for the equaliser Sevenoaks scored a second.
The final match of the first weekend was against table topping Premier Division Buckingham. The 6-0 score line did not reflect the quality of the Magpies performance against an in form Buckingham team.
Magpies will travel to Nottingham University on Saturday 13th Januaryand Sunday 14th January to complete their remaining four league fixture against Surbiton, Beeston, Chelmsford and St Albans.
