Magpies Ladies played 4 matches at Nottingham Trent University in the first weekend of the Indoor National League Division 1.
On Saturday they started with a brilliant performance against a strong looking Surbiton team. Magpies raced into a 4-0 lead at half time thanks to 3 corners by Emma Lee Smith and one by Sarah Brook. Emma extended the lead to 5 mid way through the 2nd half before a late consolation by Surbiton.
In the afternoon match Magpies started slowly against Brooklands Poynton, going 1 down at a penalty corner. However, Magpies soon equalised thanks to a deflection at a PC by Byrony Lund.
In the second half Magpies started with a purple patch of 3 goals from open play. Lucy Miller set up Emma, Hannah Palmer finished from an excellent pass by Lauren Barber and Emma put Magpies 4-1 up.
Brooklands scored in the last minute to leave a score of 4-2 and a very satisfactory first day for Magpies.
On Sunday the action started with the match of the tournament between Magpies and East Grinstead.
EG had a powerful short corner routine which punished Magpies 3 times in the first 7 minutes. However, Magpies did not panic and soon replied with an Emma Lee Smith corner. EG scored again and in a dramatic end to the half Magpies had a goal disallowed. The second half started another Eg penalty corner goal to leave Magpies with a mountain to climb (5-1 down). There followed a brilliant team effort: a solo goal by Emma, a PC by Emma, a superb one touch finish by Sarah from a long pass to make it 4-5. EG called a time-out. A tense finish saw chances at both ends. Another superb Magpies passing move was finished off by Charlotte Harrison to bring the scores level. In the last 2 minutes Sarah and Charlie both had good chances to snatch a victory and EG hit the post. In the end the sides had to settle for a draw.
Magpies finished the weekend with another hard game against Wakefield. Great defending by captain Debbie Francis, Katrina Warnes and a series of excellent saves by Megan Adams kept Magpies level at half time. Another superb second half performance saw Magpies controlling possession but unable to beat the excellent Wakefield keeper. With time running out Sarah Brook went on a run past two defenders and with the keeper expecting a pass she found space to squeeze in a shot to the delight of Magpies travelling band of supporters (thanks to you all for really helping the team this weekend). Emma found time for another good goal dribbling around the keeper the give Magpies a welcome 2-0 victory.
This means that Magpies and East Grinsted have both finished week 1 with 10 points: EG ahead on goal difference. See table and results from ENGLAND HOCKEY
After the second weekend, two teams will be promoted to the Premier League for next season.
