Magpies arrived early at Pelicans Hockey Club in Kings Lynn with a squad of 7 players, keen to continue improving after the last tournament at Watton.
In the first Match, Magpies faced Norwich Dragons B. Will Johnson in goal came out smartly to kick the ball clear early on. After that, Magpies had most of the play, but could not force the ball into the goal, resulting in a 0-0 draw.
Magpies then faced Watton. This match proved to be very frustrating, with Magpies creating 4 or 5 short corners through good play by Rory Salter and Inigo Bueno de Mesquita, but unfortunately, the ball always either found more Watton feet or went wide of the goal. This meant another 0-0 result in a game Magpies felt like they should have won.
Next up were Norwich City. Both teams played well in a lively game. Good defending by Jacob Ash and Charlie Hall meant that again Magpies were not threatened too much at the back. Sam Emms hit the post for Magpies in the best opportunity of the match, but again the scoreline stayed at 0-0, a common result in these short 8 minute games.
Norwich Dragons A were the next opposition. Dragons continued their formidable run in the tournament, winning impressively. Hard work by the defence and Tristan Kendall in Midfield managed to keep the score down to 3-0. Also Sam Emms did nearly score on a counter attack in Magpies’ brightest spell of the game.
Magpies saved their best performance till last, bouncing back well from the defeat to play Pelicans. Playing with a greater urgency, Magpies looked the stronger team throughout. Inigo and Rory came close to scoring, but eventually it was Sam who scored with a powerful strike to defeat Pelicans 1-0 in a much deserved victory.
Magpies would end up finishing 4th in the tournament- a position which was lower than it would have been had Magpies scored in the games which they had dominated. Beating the 2nd placed team, Pelicans, showed the potential that this Magpies team truly has.
Magpies defended well throughout, only conceding goals in one out of 5 matches. With an excellent performance like this and a stronger squad developing, the rest of the season looks very encouraging for the U10’s as they build towards the Norfolk Championships.
