Santas and elves take time out for hockey at Harleston Magpies
On Saturday 10th December Harleston Magpies Hockey Club hosted what is hoped to become an annual Dads – v- Lads Christmas hockey fixture. The game was played at Weybread over four quarters in high spirits between thirteen Santa dads, just one Mrs Claus and twenty two keen and highly excitable elves.
A jovial crowd warmed by mulled wine cheered on the players and were treated to a festive game of hockey, which ultimately finished 1-1 after an overtime short corner was converted by the Elves.
Event organiser and Magpies Boys Development Team Manager Mark Emms said: ‘The spirit of this summer’s Rio Olympics GB hockey success still lives on at Magpies Hockey Club, and we had lots of dads keen to try out their stick skills with a festive twist. A Christmas fancy dress Dads –v-Lads match seemed just the ticket!
Mr Emms continued: ‘We all enjoy the competitive cup and league hockey we play across the different age groups here at Harleston Magpies, but it’s also important to make time for friendly socials like this’.
After the game players and spectators enjoyed hot turkey rolls and hospitality in the club house provided by parents. James Smith, the Club’s Boys Youth Development Officer was delighted with the turn out, saying: ‘It’s great to be able to celebrate our achievements so far this season in such festive style. With our growing youth membership, we’ll be arranging more friendlies and fun tournaments in the future’.
