Magpies 2’s took on Norwich City 2’s in a local derby not rivalled by any other. Magpies welcomed back Oli in goal, Karl the German, Richard Larkin and long time on loan magpie James Osborn. It was also a debut start for Max. A high intensity warm up showed that magpies meant business today. From push back we pressed aggressively and the front line of AJ, Rob K, Dave S, Jude and Karl were forcing the Norwich defence to turn the ball over. The midfield of LB, Dave F, Morgan, Ozzie were pouncing on the lose balls and we were looking like banging the goals in. This would have been the case had the Norwich keeper not been in such fine form. A string of saves frustrating us until LB picked the ball on the left side of the ‘D’ and delivered a ball in with such precision that Ozzie need only get a stick on it to deflect it away for 1-0. With no Dickon, Tris dropped into the back line and between him, Hugo, max and Larkin they were controlling the game from the back with the odd assistance from Oli The Wall. Norwich grabbed an equaliser from a short corner and that’s how it ended at the break. The second half was a mixed affair of quality hockey, ill discipline, poor composure and confusion. We were desperate for the winner and bragging rights and it was good work through the middle that finally saw us get an equaliser when Jude ‘twinkle toes’ Potruff mazed his way through before feeding AJ in the ‘D’ who’s saved shot fell kindly to Tris who used his years (and years) of experience to dispatch the ball into the net. The game finished 2-1 and a well deserved, well fought 3 points.
