MENS 2ND TEAM REPORT 26TH JANUARY 2019

Mens 2nd Team v Crostyx D 3-3

Harleston Magpies Men’s 2’s welcomed Crostyx to the nest in a game that Magpies desperately needed to take some points to avoid us getting into a relegation battle.

With returns to the team for Chris Routs and Josh Wiggins the quality of our side was clear to see. Sadly Dickon Taylor was a last minute call off due to sickness meaning Tris Baynes was going to take up his much favoured position at centre back.

The game started  at a cracking pace and it was within 2 minutes that Josh beat a couple of players, entered the ‘D’ wide and cooly rifled a shot into the bottom corner. Crostyx had come to play hockey and it was turning into a great game for the neutral. Some sloppy play at the back saw us turn the ball over once too many times and Crostyx jumped on a loose ball to punish us and make it 1-1.

The back four of Morgan, Hugo, Tris and Jamie looked comfortable on the ball and were able to pick out their midfield of Josh, Lawrence and Dave with ease. An aerial from our midfield which looked like it was going nowhere soon created a chance when the Crostyx keeper looked to volley it clear only to slice his kick to Ed Brice who pushed the ball past the keeper and the athletic figure of Robbie Kinsella was able to outpace the keeper and cooly tap the ball away to make it 2-1.

Crostyx found an equaliser early on in the second half and so many times this season Magpies could have rolled over and given in, but not today!!

The frontline of Ed, Andy, Rob and Jude we’re making tireless runs and it was Andy’s super work rate that won the ball high in the Crostyx half and managed to find the dominant figure of Kinsella at the top of the ‘D’ who with limited backswing unleashed fury and the ball cannoned into the bottom corner. 3-2 Magpies!

As is the way at the bottom half of the league no game is easy and to Crostyx credit they never gave up. A short corner late on sadly beat our short corner defence team and made the score 3-3.

This was a game of great teamwork and determination with outstanding play from Tris at the back, Josh was influential in the middle and with the wise head of Kinsella upfront chances were always likely. No man of the match was chosen this week as there were too many good players on display today.

A point is a great stepping stone for the squad as we look to build on this and go again next week.
