Magpies 1 – Harpenden 0
The one good thing that could be said after the defeat to Ipswich 2’s on Saturday, was that we only had to wait 24 hours to put things right. The home fixture against Harpenden was always going to be a tough game – they were on a good run of form and had drawn 2-2 with (soon to be promoted) Wapping on Saturday.
In summary, this was a tight match and although there were chances for both teams, there was only one goal. This was scored by birthday boy Rob Kinsella with a bullet penalty stroke into the bottom corner which nearly broke the backboards, following excellent hassling of the defence/keeper by Martin Fields.
The watching supporters will probably agree this wasn’t a classic, but the overall workrate was good against a Harpenden side who had excellent movement off the ball. They will probably feel they deserved a point, but on balance we were the better side.
The points tally for the weekend of 3 out of a possible 6 means we cannot now finish higher than 4th, but at least we put right some of the wrongs from the extremely disappointing result at Ipswich. Next week sees the final game at home against Letchworth, the team currently lying in 5th place. We lost the reverse fixture earlier in the season, so this should be a good game and an opportunity to finish the season on a high.
