ROSIES’S WEEKLY WRAP UP 18TH NOVEMBER 2017

It was a fantastic weekend for Magpies consisting of 10 wins on Saturday and 5 on Sunday. The Nest was bustling as both first teams were playing at home with the crowd in good spirits after witnessing Kevin Ridley in his Y fronts!

Following a draw last weekend the Men’s 1sts knew that only a win would do when they hosted struggling Blueharts. Dave Gilbert opened the scoring followed by Giles Flatt. Andrew Bedwell’s shot was stopped on the line by the body of a defender which resulted in a penalty flick which was powerfully converted by Archie Winter. Gilbert added another goal before Simon Hipwell’s reverse stick shot took the final score to 5-0. Congratulations to Jonty Gosling for earning the man of the match accolade.

The Ladies 1sts were also on the hunt for three points after last week’s draw and welcomed Debbie Francis and Katrina Sitch to the squad to face Southgate. Tor Findlay broke the deadlock, leading to frustration and some illegal tackles from the Southgate team, resulting in them being a player down for most of the second half. This provided Emma Lee-Smith space to score her first from the top of the circle after another interception by the midfield and pressure on the Southgate defence. She then finished off her brace firing in a rebound after another positive run from Whiting down the right and a saved shot from Harrison.

The Men’s 4s looked to continue their winning run when they entertained Felixstowe but unfortunately this wasn’t to be. Working hard to come back from a goal behind Magpies found themselves 3-2 up at half time with goals from Toby Hughes (2) and Hugo Thomas. Although Toby secured his hat trick goal in the second half, Magpies were vulnerable at the back and Felixstowe were able to score two late goals, ending 4-5 winners.

Jose Tibbenham got on the scoreboard in her 5th teams third win on the trot. After her opening goal the youngsters lost focus and allowed Norwich City to equalise but after a stern talking to at half time, created the chance for Honey to cross then all onto the P spot for Player of the Match Beth to convert. Elsewhere the Ladies 2s won 2-0 over St Neots whilst the 3rd, 4th and 7th XI all had losses.

The Ladies 6ths are on an unbeaten streak and hosted Norwich City 6ths on Saturday. It took a while to get going but Vanessa Vigrass found the goal first followed by Rachael Clifford. Despite solid defending from Felicity Perry and Poppy Felgate, City put together some great passages of play and were rewarded by a goal, but Clifford struck again for Magpies, bagging a 3-1 win and another 3 points.

The men’s 2s went into their game against Norwich Dragons full of confidence following last weeks 16-0 win. The oppositions defence kept Magpies initial attempts out but Jude Portruff found a way through, followed by veteran Matt Bensly who made it 2-0.

The youth teams were back in action on Sunday and all involved should be very proud of the 5 out of 5 win rate. The U18 girls smashed Norwich Dragons 12-0 with goals from Tor Findlay (3), Grace Cresswell, Lottie Summers, Lauren Rowe (4), Martha Lawrence (2) and Rose Winter.

The U18 boys faced stiffer competition on the other Dragons pitch but after the scores were tied 4-4 at full time, with goals from Jack Hobbs, Archie Winter (3), Kieran Peters scored the deciding penalty flick to win the match. The U16 boys won 3-1 against Cambridge City with Jude Portruff, Tom Caston and Michael Ahrens getting the goals. The U14 boys beat Saffron Walden 5-0 and the U14 girls had a sensational win against Sudbury with goals coming from Georgie Gardens (6), Ellen Pope and Jess Menzies.
