Harleston Magpies Mens 1st team match report

Harleston 4 – Bedford 0

Harleston Magpies completed a resounding win over top of the table Bedford on Saturday. In what was arguably the team’s best performance of the season, the club ran out 4-0 winners to move above Bedford and into second in the table, pushing Bedford down to third.

Magpies started strongly and were rewarded by going 2-0 up in the first 10 minutes. The first goal converted from close range by Tom Graham after a well worked move, the second, from a well taken corner by Andy Hipwell. The team continued to create chances with the attacking unit of Tom Graham, Jimmy Wheeler, Andy Hipwell and Rhodri Furlong continuing to cause the Bedford defence problems. With 10 minutes to go in the first half, Simon Hipwell extended the lead to 3 after another well worked opportunity – strengthening Magpies’ grip on the game.

It was not all one way traffic though, and the team came under further pressure after Andrew Bedwell was yellow carded for a professional foul. The team withstood the Bedford pressure with the defence continuing to nullify the attacking threat posed by Bedford, their clear cut chances being kept to a bare minimum.

The game started to disintegrate somewhat in the second half. More cards continued to follow, Bedford twice being reduced to 10 men. Magpies continued to cause problems going forward constantly hitting Bedford on the break. The resounding win was capped off with the second goal of the game from Tom Graham – again converting from close range after a flowing Magpies move.

The result puts a dent in the title hopes for Bedford, and keeps Magpies in the hunt in case St.Albans drop points on the run in. Next week Magpies travel to bottom of the table Bishop Stortford, who are yet to pick up a point.
