Harleston Magpies U16 Girls Report

Harleston Magpies Under 16 Girls travelled to Stourport to play in the Midlands Region against Saffron Walden, Stourport and Oxford Hawks for a place in the National Finals. Only the team finishing first would go to the Nationals.

Magpies made a promising start in their opening match against Saffron Walden holding a 1-0 half time lead and went on in the second half to increase their score to 3-0 thanks to three goals from Lottie Summers.

After a brief rest Magpies prepared to take on the favourites Stourport who had already beaten Oxford Hawks 6-0. Magpies started really well with some lovely attacking moves and were playing better than in their opening match. Unfortunately it all unravelled very quickly when Stourport scored twice from two successive penalty corners to give them a 2-0 half time lead. Magpies battled away in the second half and despite some good play lacked real penetration in the final third. Finally Stourport added a third goal to give them a decisive 3-0 lead.

In their final match Magpies played Oxford Hawks hoping to finish on a high with another win. Things did not quite go to plan as Oxford Hawks took the lead. Magpies came back strongly and were awarded a penalty stroke which was put away by Lottie Summers to level the scores at 1-1. From then on the game flowed to and fro with chances being missed at both ends. The result was a 1-1 draw.

Stourport were the deserved winners with a very strong team and will play in the National Finals in April.
