Womens 1s vs Holcombe W1

Womens 1s Match Report 21.10.2023

Magpies started the game on the back foot resulting in Holcombe sneaking the ball past Sophia in the first five minutes. The girls soon fought back showing a real fire to get a goal. Magpies scored, showing class as they passed the ball around the goalkeeper to level the scores. A few short corners were awarded to magpies after some promising circle entries.

Going into the second quarter, both teams had equal chances in the D with many amazing saves being made by Sophia throughout the match! Magpies held their composure whilst the other team started to get a bit mouthy. Magpies conceded a flick from a stick tackle by the goalie. Magpies showed a great display of small unit play on both the right and left-hand side, however Holcombe were relentless and put 2 more goals in the back of the net. Jess L and Fran R-B threw some ariels over the Holcombe defence from both sides of the pitch.

After half time, Magpies continued to stay strong at the back until they were faced with two counter attacks from the fast Holcombe side, resulting in a score of 5-1 at the end of the third quarter..

In the fourth, Magpies were awarded another penalty corner. They unfortunately missed out on a goal due to a poor execution at the top of the circle. Magpies continued to defend well with Lauren Barber yet again displaying her formidable defending skills, staying dominant in her tackles and stepping in front of her attacker. Despite this good run, a flick was awarded to Holcombe after a foot on the line preventing the ball going in the goal. Holcombe executed their flick top bins leaving a score of 6-1. Magpies ended the game well with Anna Cogdell displaying an array of some super 3D skills, allowing her to eliminate the players of the Holcombe defence. This resulted in a last minute corner. The score remained unchanged, finishing 6-1.

Supporters on the sideline were very much appreciated and we thank you for the continuous energy and encouragement. Particular mention to Loulou and Hicksy for showing commitment to the team by showing up to motivate from the bench despite their injuries.
