Womens 1s vs Slough W1

Womens 1s Match Report 04.11.2023

The Magpies women's 1s travelled all the way to Slough on Saturday ready for some intense hockey action.

As the first whistle blew Slough came out hard applying a lot of pressure. Unfortunately this lead to Magpies conceding the first short corner of the game but defended well, keeping Slough out of the goal. This was followed but returning pressure by the women's first which resulted by a promising shot on goal. However, the first quarter ended in 0-0.

As the second quarter began, Magpies really grew into the game, stringing some good passes together. A ball down the right hand side of the pitch allowed a deflection into the D for Magpies. This resulted in a foul on the penalty spot, meaning a stroke was awarded for the women's first. Unfortunately, the penalty was saved, but this did not hinder Magpie's determination as Slough conceded 2 penalty corners. However, they were not converted and all was still to play for as the half time whistle blew

Tension certainly grew as the ladies entered the second half. Both side were playing well and pressure was building for a goal to be scored. With Slough conceding another short corner it felt as if the ladies were on the brink of a goal. This short corner resulted with a foot on the line and another penalty stroke being awarded. This time it was converted and Magpies went 1-0 up going into the final quarter.

The ladies began the last quarter well and as Slough suffered from a green card, Magpies could keep the pressure going. Slough conceded 2 short corners but defended well and kept the mighty Magpies out. However, there was a shift in the game and Slough began to come back into it. Slough were pushing for a goal and eventually got what they were hunting for. Magpies defended very hard in the last quarter and their defending meant Slough would not take 3 points from them. The final score was 1-1. A really excellent performance from the Magpies firsts.
