Womens 7s vs Watton W2

Magpies Womens 7s fielded a re-arranged squad for their home game against Watton Womens 2s, due to the recent flooding in the area and postponement of other games.

During the first half, Magpies held out well against this quick, young team and were compact in the middle and defence, with Treacle directing from the back, and Jane securing the centre midfield. Although Watton penetrated our half frequently, we were able to handle the pressure until they won a short corner and scored from a well worked move in front of goal. Undeterred we rallied and continued to fight our way back. But despite the strong efforts of Beatrice, Emma and Jenny in midfield, and Amber making some great saves, Watton got back into our half, and winning another short corner, executed the same move as before and made it two at half-time.

We felt undeterred at this point as the play had been otherwise fairly evenly matched, and that we would get through and score. Magpies played a better attacking game in the second half, with player of the match Emily defending solidly and making runs forward to push the play into their half. Jane too made great progress forward, battling to keep the ball, allowing forwards isabelle and Evie to run ahead and get into the D. We had several goal mouth scrambles, with Vanessa and Judith both agonisingly close to scoring, but Watton kept the ball out. They continued to stretch our hard working defence with Annie and Polly still battling to contain the left and right sides, but another quick move from Watton found them in space to slot in a third goal. Magpies continued to press forward for the rest of this half, winning several short corners which Watton covered, and the game remained at 0-3 at the end. A great effort from the 7s as the young players continue to improve.
