Magpies womens 7s were straight out of the blocks and into action as they began their match against a young, fit and enthusiastic UEA 3s team. UEA piled the pressure on right from the start, and Magpies needed to up their game to compete. For most of the first half the pressure was mostly all UEA. They were quick on the ball and persistent in intercepting our passes and play up the field. Our defence of Vanessa, Annie, Gillian and Caroline managed to fend off their continued attacks and short corners for most of the first half, but eventually towards the end of the half, UEA found the back of the net for a first goal.
At half time, we felt we could still make an impression on the game, but UEA scored early into the second half to make it 2-0. Alison, Katy, Emma, Judith and Beatrice worked tirelessly in the midfield to distribute the ball out and further up the pitch to our forward line. Tiggy made great attempts at keeping possession of the ball to progress into the D, along with Evie and Lily, but UEA’s defence stayed strong. The hardworking defence, and particularly goalie Verity, new to the 7s, who had an exceptional game under continuous pressure, were unable to fend off the later attacks from UEA despite their best efforts, and three further goals followed by the end of the game.
Although the score line was not flattering, the 7s really raised their game and produced some fine play. Again, thanks to Myles for managing the bench.
