Womens 7s v Thetford Town 27.01.2024

Magpies Womens 7s travelled to Thetford prepared for a tough game and set ourselves up to maintain a solid defence.

As we expected, Thetford began to press forward, but we found we were able to deal with their attacking play efficiently, and soon into the game, Magpies were showing they could turn the tables and be the attacking force. Jenny, Katy, Lily and Emma in midfield played really well, blocking Thetford players, winning the ball and sending it out to our forwards. Midway into the first half, Magpies won a short corner. Vanessa made a great hit and found Judith in the right place to send the ball in for a goal. From then on, it was a pretty tight game, with Magpies stepping up to the mark on every level, denying Thetford any chances on goal. There were a few moments where Thetford broke away and goalie Amber had to kick the ball to safety, but we held out to halftime.

Into the second half, our confidence grew and we knew it was possible to build on our lead, and our forwards made great progress. Evie continuously battled for the ball and had some fine runs up the right side. Holly, worked well having switched to the forward line from a spell in defence, and Maisie and Tiggy constantly caused trouble for the opposition with their attacking play. We won another short corner with our efforts in the second half, which did not convert, but were becoming more dominant in attack. As the game progressed, Thetford became more determined to break through and recover the game. Our back line of Annie, Vanessa, Caroline and player of the match, Beatrice, relatively new to the role of defender, stayed solid and organised right to the end, and to their credit, did not concede a short corner in the game.

We are all really happy to get this win, but also very pleased with the massive improvement of the team performance as a whole. Again, thanks to the parents for their great help and support.
