Our match was played on a chilly Autumnal morning but at least it was sunny. In fact, we were facing into the sun but that was fine. With our pushback were hopeful of controlling the game yet Dragons took the ball to our circle and soon had a couple of short corners. Luckily, with some great defending by Jose Tibbenham, Gillian Stokes and Daphne Beckett, the ball went wide. However, Dragons made good use of their unmarked players and managed to bypass our defence and score. Soon, we had the upper hand when young Holly Archer sprinted up the right wing with the ball and smashed it into the goal. Then, Abi Buck bypassed all the Dragons defence to score another goal. Next, Jo Meyer in Dragon’s circle, diverted a pass from Alison Priest straight into the goal. We were elated! Three minutes later, Dragons scored a second goal.
The second half began with Dragons determined to win. Unfortunately, the ball flew into goal after hitting one of our player’s feet. The umpire gave a penalty strike. We all grouped together on the pitch while a Dragon’s player took the strike but Peg Bridges, goalkeeper, threw herself to the ground to save the ball. The ball rolled in, but poor Peg was hurt and was carried from the pitch. We decided to play without a goalkeeper and redoubled our effort at keeping play away from our goal. Ciara Klinger, Player of the Match, Bethany Whipps and Maisie Woolward were superb at tackling and running with the ball. Play was so strong that Dragons didn’t score another goal.
