After four weeks of no matches, the women's 8ths finally had a match against UEA in Norwich with, hopefully, a frost-free pitch. The temperature was 3 degrees but sunny, so the match went ahead…happy days!
The game started well with Magpies keeping play in the UEA half and within minutes, their goalkeeper threw herself to the ground to save a shot, but quick-thinking defenders swept the ball away. We gained a short corner, yet despite a great shot at goal from Shirley McAllen, it was stopped by a ‘wall’ of players. Play was exciting with fast runs by Maisy Woolward, Lily Smith and Bethany Whipps matched by UEA who fielded some strong players.
During half time, it was decided that as the game was going so well, we’d keep our positions but try and vary the short corners. UEA had a short corner, but our defence blocked it with Georgie Saunders, joint Player of the Match, constantly clearing the ball together with Emma Tollhurst, Ciara Klinger, and Evie Foster.
Goalkeeper, Verity Green, made some fine saves and played superbly and Emma Seggons skilfully bypassed the UEA defence. Soon, UEA forwards raced towards our goal scored but we kept our heads up and within minutes, Zara Broadly, joint Player of the Match, sprinted up the middle and scored from the edge of the circle. It was a great game.
Score: 1 - 1
