On a fine, cold afternoon, we were set to play Beccles ladies away at Langley School. They fielded a very strong team, as we soon found out, when they were awarded a short corner within minutes of the start. Fortunately, our fantastic defenders managed to clear the ball wide, most notably, Rachel Baynes who played superbly and didn’t give an inch throughout the game. During open play, Beccles attacked our circle and rushed in at close range, pushed the ball over towards Bethany Whipps who found them too strong to block and scored. Despite multiple short corners, our defence repelled them each time.
At half time, skipper Shirley McAllen said that we were playing well but needed to pass quickly and not be frightened of going in for a tackle. Beccles upped their pressure during the second half with hard hitting and passing but our playing improved too. Zara Broadley made some excellent runs as did Holly Archer. Rosie Baynes played well, and Jenny Meyer made some superb tackles. Midway through, two Beccles’ forwards broke through our defence and one collided with goalkeeper, Peg Bridges, literally falling on top of her allowing the second forward to slot the ball home. Beccles were relentless in menacing pushes towards the Magpies goal but our defence managed to fend them off.
Score: 0 - 2
