Womens 8s vs UEA W4

Womens 8s v UEA 27.01.2024

Our morning match was played in lovely sunshine, but it was still cold. UEA looked fighting fit and had a large squad of players, still, we had fourteen so happy days! The match started with UEA passing the ball expertly around us and sprinting away towards our circle, however, they weren’t counting on Rachel Baynes, Rosie Baynes, and Ali Buck to block them. Some fine tackling was shown by Alison Priest, and Zara Broadley managed to sprint around the UEA forwards. During an attack on our circle, UEA hit the ball straight into Ali Buck’s foot, yet no short corner was given; the umpire admitted he couldn’t see. Soon after, Milly Scarborough-Taylor passed to Becky Holledge who smashed the ball home.

During the second half, we were awarded three short corners in a row. Shirley McAllen took the strikes and, third time lucky, Rachel Baynes hit the ball past the goalkeeper. UEA were quick to retaliate and were awarded a short corner, but our great defenders made short work of their attack on our goal and goalkeeper, Peg Bridges, made some superb defensive moves. Julie Davy worked hard at keeping the UEA forwards out of our circle and Amelia Stott made some fine runs. All too soon, UEA had a second short corner which was blocked and cleared by Rosie Baynes, however, a break away forward scored just five minutes before the end of the game.

Score: 2 - 1
