In their first match of the second half of the season, Magpies faced Wimbledon, determined to secure crucial points in the league.
Magpies worked tirelessly throughout the first quarter with our defence keeping calm and maintaining control of the game from the back. A precise ball in from Hannah De Selincourt allowed Emily Hicks to showcase her skills, beating a defender and calmly turning from an awkward angle to slot the ball in past the keeper.
Wimbledon retaliated with some dangerous breaks, however excellent saves from keeper George Flatt and strong tackles from the defensive line kept the opposition at bay. Magpie’s play started to become more frantic, thankfully the half time whistle came just in time for the girls to reset and regroup, entering the 3rd quarter with composure.
Player of the match, Anna Cogdell demonstrated some silky skills and stormed up the right to find Jess in space. Jess played the ball through to the top of the D, setting Beth Gardens to rocket the ball into the top of the net, extending Magpies' lead to 2-0.
Wimbledon attacked back with a series of quick passes and skilful runs. Using the bouncy pitch to their advantage, Wimbledon were awarded a penalty flick thanks to the undulating ball. A wide shot and George’s intimidation kept Magpies ahead.
A perfectly executed short corner routine saw Barbs strike the ball to Hannah who deflected the ball into the net from the P-spot, securing a 3-0 lead.
The final quarter tested Magpies' discipline and decision making as they maintained a strong press to secure the win. The girls left London with a clean sheet, 3 goals and 3 points.
10/10 to Wimbledon for the fantastic showers and pleasantly less spicy match teas.
