Harleston Magpies travelled to Surbiton for the last away trip of the 2023/24 season.
Feeling confident with 5 consecutive undefeated games under their belts, Magpies set off extra early due to the M25 bridge issues.
Top of the league Surbiton, having lost their last 2 games, would become champions if they took just 1 point from todays match. Spirits appeared to be high! Unfortunately the first quarter hit Magpies hard on the back foot resulting in conceding 3 early goals. Captain Hannah caught the Surbiton defence on the break in the 2nd quarter with a sensational back hand hit which was saved by some equally sensational goal keeping. A much improved goalless second quarter, Magpies came out from the half time break keen to prove they were no push over.
With a change of press going into the second half there were some moments of excellence, and space creating play by Beth Gardens in the middle created more chances and short corners, resulting a well deserved goal from Hannah. Surbiton continued to play some beautiful hockey, transferring the ball patiently until space opened up for goal number 4.
Magpies should be proud of the performance, some new young players finding their feet in the national league, Georgia making some very Fine saves and news that Magpies retain 5th position in the league, despite a loss a very positive day.
