Saturday saw 1st place versus 2nd place. Unlike the score suggests it was a tight battle with both teams never giving up. Whilst Simmo and Bear stepped up to assist the M3s and Jez was off for his monthly tanning session, it was top notch to have birthday boy – JA – back from his “special” holiday. Magpies started on top with consistent pressure at the Norfolk goal mouth. The Norfolk young keeper (hockey star of the future) kept Magpies from scoring. He even dispatched a fine Brando penalty stroke. Eventually the deadlock was broken with a well worked goal from Jack Turner. Norfolk fought back frustrating Magpies forward line. Gilly (with a borrowed stick) converted the second through a penalty corner. This stimulated Norfolk who tried to break the “mature” defensive line. Magpies stepped up a gear to focus on their “pass and move”. Well worked ball movement opened up spaces to both the left and right of the pitch with Magpies exploited.
Half time saw Magpies 2-0 up but both teams were still up for a fight. It was going to be a feisty second half. The fine bench management of Andy Johnson and the support from the Magpies Massive, the M4s were spurred into applying more pressure. Finn beautifully converted the third via a short corner. Brando launched a well taken 4th goal. Special mention to our youngsters Tom and Ben for stepping up this season from the 5s. It was unfortunate to see Ben having to step off due a back injury, but Tom dealt with the Norfolk right and left backs rather well. With his newfound stick, Gilly converted a well worked penalty corner. Not happy with two, he made his hat trick via a beautiful pass and move from defence to the front line. The last goal involved the entire team which was an example of an outstanding performance by the entire squad.
Special mention to umpires – John Snelling and Andy Smith. Thank you, Gentlemen.
A massive thank you to Bob and Nick for providing water to enable the game to go ahead.
“Man of the Match” was shared between Jamie Hudson and skipper Myles Taylor for solid performances.
“Thanks for Coming Award” went to Ben Holmes for still being in bed at the meet time.
