Harleston Magpies 1st XI faced a tough away trip to table-toppers and undefeated Repton in the Midlands National Conference. Both teams arrived at the venue after difficult journeys, with heavy rainfall and strong winds affecting travel. Fortunately, the weather cleared just in time for the match, providing perfect conditions for both players and spectators.
The Magpies started the game positively, dominating possession and passing the ball around with style and precision. Their tempo and control in the first quarter were impressive, and they seemed to dictate the pace of the match early on. However, Repton came into their own during the second quarter, stepping up the intensity and showing why they have remained unbeaten so far this season.
Repton's surge in the second quarter was clinical, as they scored three quick goals in succession, highlighting their ability to turn up the pressure when needed. By the time the halftime whistle blew, the home side held a comfortable 3-0 lead.
In the second half, Harleston continued to fight, and their efforts were rewarded with some excellent individual moments. Oakley Elsom and Sam Emms both scored superb back-hand shots, showcasing their skill under pressure. Additionally, Myles King converted a well-executed penalty corner routine, further adding to Harleston's tally. Despite these efforts, Repton's attacking prowess remained a step ahead.
The Magpies did their best to defend, with goalkeeper John Livings making a number of brilliant saves to keep his team in the game. However, Repton's relentless attacking play eventually overwhelmed the Harleston defence, and the home side finished the match with a dominant 10-3 victory.
It was a tough result for Harleston to take, but the team can take pride in their fighting spirit and individual flashes of brilliance. They now turn their focus to their upcoming home match against Nottingham University, a must-win game before the Christmas break.
