Women's 1s Match Report 01.02.25

On Saturday, the Magpies Women's 1st Team returned to outdoor league action after a successful indoor campaign at Repton, as they welcomed the University of Exeter to a sunny Weybread.

The visiting Exeter side, which had previously defeated Magpies during their last encounter, arrived as a fit and strong team. However, since that match, the Magpies’ confidence had grown, buoyed by a string of solid team performances. The team were particularly pleased to welcome back Ella Picton, who had spent the past two years recovering from injury, and Lauren Rowe, returning from completing her studies in America.

The game began at a fast pace, with both teams creating opportunities early on. However, it was Magpies who controlled the majority of possession in the first half, earning themselves some penalty corners. Unfortunately, they were unable to convert these chances into goals. Defensively, the team were resolute, with Sophia Coleman in goal called upon only once—responding superbly to a difficult, on-target shot.

While both sides pressed for the opening goal, neither team could break the deadlock. Cherry Seaborn-Sheeran came closest to scoring, reacting to a brilliant through ball from 'Player of the Match' Beth Gardens.

The final stages of the match were frantic, with both teams receiving cards. Exeter, however, found themselves down to just nine players with three minutes remaining, but Magpies couldn’t capitalise on this advantage.

At the start of the season, the team would have been pleased with a point against a strong side in the promotion race. However, after a solid performance, the team, as well as the crowd felt they deserved all three points. They now look to build on this display as they prepare to host Southgate at Weybread next Saturday, with the match set to kick off at 2:30 pm.

All support is welcomed and appreciated by the team.
