On Saturday, the Magpies Women’s 1st Team travelled to Wimbledon for their first away fixture of the new year, determined to secure three points.
The game started at a high tempo, with Magpies pressing aggressively. It took just six minutes for Beth Gardens to win possession on the halfway line before going on an amazing solo run, finishing calmly into the bottom left corner to give Magpies the lead. Just two minutes later, Magpies doubled their advantage as Lauren Rowe scored from a short corner routine. With a 2-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, the team looked confident and composed.
Wimbledon responded in the second quarter, pulling a goal back to make it 2-1. However, Magpies remained calm under pressure, continuing to win crucial battles in the press and maintaining their defensive structure.
The third quarter proved to be the most challenging period for Magpies as Wimbledon found an equalizer, making it 2-2. The momentum shifted, and the travelling supporters were on the edge of their seats as Magpies fought to get back on top.
As the game entered the fourth quarter, Magpies settled back into their rhythm, playing with renewed composure. Their persistence was rewarded in the 57th minute when Maya Christopher pulled off an awesome play, volleying the ball from the top of the D to restore the lead. In the tense final moments, Magpies defended resolutely to secure a well-earned 3-2 victory.
Gardens was named Man of the Match for her amazing solo goal and working tirelessly throughout the match.
