Women's 1s Match Report 01.03.25

On Saturday 1st March, Harleston Magpies Women's 1st travelled to play Sevenoaks. It was perfect weather for the hockey game and after an intense warm up, the whistle blew to start the match.

In the first quarter the women started well. They put pressure on Sevenoaks early into the game, dominating possession and putting dangerous balls into the circle. However, the opposition defended bravely and kept Magpies out for the duration of the first quarter, ending it 0-0.

After a quick break, the second quarter began, and Magpies came out with the same intensity as the first quarter. Magpies passed the ball well and found their way into the attacking half multiple times. Despite the relentless pressure, Sevenoaks fought back and started to put together some good passages of play, leading to one of the Magpies players getting a green card. Although the 1st were a player down, they kept Sevenoaks out, and by half time the score was still a tense 0-0.

Moving swiftly into the second half, there was still all to play for. Magpies continued their intensity from the first half but couldn’t break down the Sevenoaks defence. Magpies made it harder for themselves when another player picked up a green card. However, the women fought on with many opportunities at goal, but unfortunately the ball didn’t cross the line, so at the end of the 3rd quarter the score was till 0-0.

The tension rose as the final quarter began, and Magpies were keen to continue their domination. Early into the quarter, one of the Sevenoaks players received a green card, which gave Magpies the advantage. Eventually the stalemate broke in the 56th minute with Hannah de Selincourt scoring penalty stroke won from a penalty corner. This advantage didn’t stop Sevenoaks, as they won a penalty and scored to equalise the game not long after. With the score now equal again, both teams threw everything they had into the last 10 minutes. In the end, the score was 1-1.
