After a tough defeat last week, the Women's 7s were determined to bounce back with a stronger performance against Norwich Dragons 6. From the start, the defensive unit of Annie Lancaster, Skyla Jarvis, Charlotte Scott, and Treacle Griffin-Taylor quickly organised themselves, showing resilience and composure. Both Skyla and Charlotte had outstanding games, putting in critical tackles and providing solid cover throughout the match. Abi Lewis in goal also provided confident direction, making key saves to keep the team in the game during a hard-fought first half.
By halftime, the score remained 0-0, with the team drawing motivation from a solid team talk, energised by jelly babies to keep spirits high. However, with only 11 players available and no substitutes, the legs of the Magpies began to tire as the second half progressed. Despite this, the midfield trio of Judith Masters, Jenny Meyer, and Emma Seggens ran tirelessly, covering endless ground and keeping the pressure on the Dragons.
As the opposition began to rotate their numerous substitutes, they eventually broke the deadlock with a well-executed breakaway goal. However, the Magpies refused to let their heads drop. Determined to fight back, they rallied from a long ball out of defence, with Hannah coolly slotting home the equaliser to bring the score to 1-1.
Zara Broadley, Hannah Brown, and Maisy Woolward worked tirelessly up front, pushing for a potential winner. However, in the final minutes of the game, Norwich Dragons capitalised on their fresh legs, scoring a late goal to snatch the victory before the final whistle.
Despite the 2-1 loss, it was a valiant team effort, with every player giving 100%. Special thanks go to Megan Fisher for stepping into goal in the second half and making some crucial saves to keep the game alive. A commendable performance from all, especially considering the lack of substitutes. Skyla and Charlotte's standout performances in defence helped keep the Magpies competitive until the final whistle.
Finally, a big thank you to Andy and Sue for their excellent umpiring in this late fixture.
Final Score: Women's 7s 1 - 2 Norwich Dragons 6
A really strong effort from the Women's 7s – onward to next week!
