Magpies played at home during the afternoon in very strong wind but, luckily, it was dry. Bedford fielded a sizeable squad of players and soon showed their strength with quick passing and an early short corner. Magpies’ defenders were superb at stopping shots on goal during short corners and goalkeeper, Karen Fletcher, was skilful in deflecting the ball away from the circle. Play seemed to remain in our half and soon, a Bedford forward with just our goalkeeper in defence, scored a goal. Skipper Mel Vincent played hard and sent the ball forward, yet Bedford were able to intercept our passes and scored again.
At half time, Anouska advised us to not panic and give good, controlled passes. Certainly, our play during the second half was much better and evenly spread. Rachel Summers always fought hard and made some fine tackles. Passing was good. However, Bedford were still able to send the ball to their unmarked players and another quick goal was scored. Soon, the ball reached the Bedford circle where Joanna Meyer, positioned by the left post, smashed the ball home! We were elated! With the wind at our backs and excellent playing, the rest of the match was tough but enjoyable.
