It was Good King Wenceslas weather which greeted both teams as they arrived on pitch to play the return fixture with Sudbury. But it was true to say that not even the below freezing temperatures dampened the enthusiasm of the Magpies’ team. They were on a winning roll and three centimetres of snow on the pitch was not going to put them off. It was just a good job the ball was orange!
It didn’t take long for Magpies to find their composure and some excellent linking play between midfield and forwards brought a plethora of goals from a number of players. The goals also came from different scenarios. First touch passing and good stick control accounted for at least four of the goals whilst strong attacks down the right wing with well-paced passes into the circle led to two easy far post tap-ins. Penalty corners were also in abundance and resulted in another couple of goals. It was also pleasing to see penalty corners taken with variations on the straight hit on goal.
The goal scorers were Noah1; Ollie 2; Ian 1; Elliot 2; Harris 1; Sam 1
The defence also had a good day. With support from Richard in goal and Myles as sweeper, the junior players didn’t hesitate to quell some speedy attacks from Sudbury from both left and right wings. They are now showing a consistent ability to put in some strong, effective and successful tackles and then to pass the ball accurately up the field to create the perfect counter-attack.
Well done to all the players who never gave up and took quite a time after the game to warm up. Thank you to David, Myles and Richard for your help and support and to Rae as the new glove dispensing officer. Thank you also to the Umpires who were insistent on playing the game to the very bitter end and to Ian and family for the warming refreshment.
Congratulations and thank you to the supporters especially those who managed to remain in post throughout the game even with snow covered hoods and coats. As I always say, Norway could not be as cold
