The Harleston Magpies Women’s 1s faced a long journey down to Exeter on Friday evening ahead of their away fixture against Exeter University Women’s 1s. With Storm Amy sweeping across the country, the team battled through challenging travel conditions to ensure they were well-prepared and rested for Saturday’s clash.
Magpies started the match with impressive intensity and purpose, bringing the game to the home side. Magpies' high press and sharp passing set the tone early on, showing no signs of fatigue from the previous day’s travel.
Exeter, however, managed to break the deadlock in the first quarter, capitalising on a brief lapse in defensive structure. They doubled their lead in the second quarter with a well-worked goal, putting Magpies under pressure.
Just before half-time, Harleston responded with determination. A slick attacking move down the left-hand side culminated in a crucial goal that brought the score to 2-1, giving the visitors momentum heading into the break.
The third quarter saw both sides battling hard, with Magpies continuing to push for an equaliser. Their energy and teamwork were evident, but Exeter’s defence held firm.
In the final quarter, Exeter extended their lead with a third goal, sealing a 3-1 victory despite Harleston’s relentless efforts.
While the result didn’t go their way, Magpies showed resilience, quality, and a fighting spirit that bodes well for the rest of the season.
