On Saturday, the Women’s 1st Team travelled to Reading for the next fixture in their league campaign.
Although Reading 2s are newly promoted, the squad were well aware they’d face a strong and determined side—who have had a solid start to the season.
The opening quarter saw Reading apply intense pressure, pushing high with seven players and forcing Magpies onto the back foot. Despite the relentless press, the defence stood strong, with Lauren Barber putting in an excellent performance to help keep the scores level going into the second quarter.
The second quarter followed a similar pattern, with Reading winning a number of penalty corners. However, Magpies’ defensive unit remained resolute, clearing their lines and preventing any breakthroughs.
Heading into the second half, Magpies knew they needed to keep more possession and find ways to play around Reading’s high press. The team worked tirelessly, covering plenty of ground and showing real determination. Unfortunately, it was Reading who struck first, breaking the deadlock in the 46th minute with a sharp reverse-stick finish into the top of the net.
In the final quarter, Magpies pushed hard in search of an equaliser and created several promising chances, but were unable to convert. Beth Cordukes was deservedly named Player of the Match for her tireless performance, making numerous surging runs and creating attacking opportunities throughout the game.
Despite a valiant effort, the final whistle blew with Magpies narrowly missing out on any points.
After two tough back-to-back away fixtures, the team now look forward to returning to home turf next Saturday, when they take on Southgate 1s at 2:30pm. Your support will be hugely appreciated!
