Womens 2s vs Cannock W1

20.09.25 Cannock (A)

After a successful 24/25 season in the East prem, saw Magpies face off against Cannock, with at least 8 national league debutants.

From the whistle Magpies got off to a great start taking charge of possesion from the outset. Despite a few early mistakes Magpies adjusted well to their new roles and surface of the pitch. Magpies responded to Cannock’s press well leading to some promising out letting situations, creating opportunities in and around Cannocks 25 despite some unfortunate miss placed passes.

After a brief break, and entering quarter 2, magpies dominated possesion for long stretches of the game. Passing the ball well with pace and precision, magpies found their way into Cannocks attacking half multiple times, with some close opportunities despite Cannocks relentless pressure.

However, despite the promising build-up play and several near-misses, the game took an unfortunate turn. After some resolute defending by Cannock, a sudden break in play led to two quick-fire goals. Despite the setback, Magpies didn’t let their heads drop, as they continued to carve out chances. But unfortunately couldn’t find the back of the net resulting the score at half time being 0-2 to Cannock.

As the second half began, both teams battled hard, Magpies maintained the high intensity they’d shown in the first half, matching Cannock’s physicality. However, despite their strong start, Magpies were caught out by another unfortunate break, allowing Cannock to bring the score to 0-3. Magpies fought back with determination, winning themselves a well earned short corner.

As the rain continued to pour, the Magpies entered the final quarter with determination and grit. Despite the challenging conditions, they kept pushing forward and pushing Cannock back into their own 25. Goalkeeper Meg delivered a standout performance, making a string of impressive saves that kept the team in the game — earning her the well-deserved of Player of the Match. In the closing minutes, Magpies gave everything they had in search of a goal, but it just wasn’t to be. The final whistle blew with the score at 0–3 in favour of Cannock.
