There was joy for Magpies across our junior section this weekend with our girls and boys under 12 teams being crowned Norfolk Champions. They join our under 10 boys and girls in the East Finals who, just a few weekends ago finished runners up in their respective Norfolk Championships.
Magpies will now represent Norfolk in all categories of the East Finals on the 26th & 27th of April, pitting their wits and testing their skills against the best teams from Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Lincolnshire.
The East Finals are being hosted at Magpies again this year, and we will again need the support of our membership to make this event another success. If you can lend a hand with car parking, in the kitchen, trouble shooting on the day or baking cakes then please email James Smith at youthchairman@magpies-hockey.co.uk
An incredible achievement by the players and coaching staff connected to all these squads. To have all four teams in the East Finals is a real privilege and something the club has not achieved for many, many years.
Magpies had high hopes going into today’s championships for our U12 boys team, with a core group of players left from last year’s National Finals squad and a strong pre-season behind them they were deservedly tagged as favourites. They did not disappoint, however they did not have it all their own way. Pelicans Hockey Club (Kings Lynn) pushed them hard, earning a 1-1 draw against Magpies suggesting the title could go down to goal difference but with Pelicans then also dropping points against Norwich City, Magpies topped the table with 4 wins and a draw, Pelicans finishing 2nd.
However, in 3rd place, after a slow start was Magpies second boys team. After two losses and a draw they were propping up the bottom of the table but wins against Norwich Dragons and Norwich City saw them finish strongly and finish third in Norfolk, ahead of Norwich City, Norwich Dragons and North Norfolk.
In the girls U12 event Magpies went into the day with hope but realism. With a team that are generally U11, they have worked ever so hard at training and steadily improving their results going from 4th place in their first competition of the year to runners up in their last event at Pelicans. However could they replicate this form at the Norfolk Championships or was this a step too far this year?
They started the day with a daunting match against Dereham - this seasons standout girls U12 team. A nervy game with chances at both ends, ended in a 0-0 draw. A great outcome for Magpies which gave the squad great confidence for their next game against Norwich City which they duly won 4-0, following this up with a 3-0 win against Pelicans and a 2-1 win against Norwich City. With Dereham struggling to find goals today, drawing rather than winning, Magpies finished top of the table and were crowned Norfolk Champions.
